Butterflies in the Gardens

Flower Hill Farm Families of Butterflies from 2014 — There were many butterflies in the gardens of Flower Hill Farm in 2014 but there were varied species missing too. I missed each butterfly like a dear friend who moves away and will not be around to share the apple blossoms or champagne lunches. For now, I celebrate the butterflies that made it and were on wing within our gardens last season.  The showy swallowtails always stir the currents with their large wings and are easily noted around … [Read more...]

Both American Lady and Painted Lady adults will go for a diverse range of nectar sources. Their … [Read more...]

Flower Hill Farm Butterflies of 2012 ~ Mating Pearl Crescents

February 16, 2013 by Carol Duke Leave a Comment

As with last winter, it is fun to look back over the vibrant colors and fragile beauties of the past season's flora and fauna. I have shared a bit of the gardens and now for a bit of romance amongst butterflies just a day after Valentine's Day.  I begin 'Butterflies of 2012' with the strikingly patterned Pearl Crescent, Phyciodes tharos, and share a warm summer afternoon of observing these tiny butterflies as they flit about the north field mating.  This particular sighting was interesting as … [Read more...]
