Incandescent Sky ~ Afterglow Of A Storm

Flower Hill Farm Retreat is fabulously situated facing, from the back, the northeast, east and southeast. Added to the verdant views of Carey and Walnut Hill and the sweeping landscape towards the Mount Holyoke Range, the East Branch of the Mill River runs in the valley below our land and offers atmospheric marvels of mist that sometimes merge with clouds to nearly erase the horizon. The sky above is a large dome offering breathtaking light shows during sunrise and sunset, especially after a … [Read more...]

A Winter Focus ~ Cedar Waxwing Ornaments and Long Nights Moon

December 20, 2013 by Carol Duke Leave a Comment

The nakedness of winter's landscape can sometimes seem cold and lonely, when suddenly, whoosh, all together in flight, a flash of fluttering life lifts the spirit high towards outermost tips of a beloved Black Cherry tree. Offering light and enchantment to the lucky viewer, a flock, an 'ear-full', a 'museum' of over sixty Cedar Waxwings alight, sprinkled along the top of the skeletal cherry canopy, resembling delicate ornaments bedecking leafless limbs. A closer focus reveals hints of … [Read more...]

Light and Leaves At Play In A Bright Autumn Landscape

October 18, 2013 by Carol Duke Leave a Comment

It has been a gorgeous fall with leaves clinging to the trees far longer than I recall in recent years. The rain has held off, but the trees are slowly releasing their leaf fasteners and hundreds of their leafy members, like golden rain, are falling with the gentlest of breezes throughout the dry days and nights. The sounds of falling leaves . . . flights of leaves . . . piles of leaves . . . walking and kicking up leaves are all quintessentially 'Fall'. I am not one to run out and rake any … [Read more...]

July’s Ending Rainbow Rosy Light Magical Monarch Metamorphosis

August 1, 2012 by Carol Duke Leave a Comment

So Long July. Thanks for the rain and rainbows at sunset . . . many hours of luminous light . . . Hemeracallis, hydrangea and hummingbirds aplenty . . . copious caterpillars becoming complete within their magical Monarch chrysalises . . . joyful viewings shared of their virgin flights into butterflies . . . first ever sighting of a Giant in the garden . . .  exceptional dusk encountering . . .  a family of flying squirrels soaring from house to Rock Maple trees . . . eighteen … [Read more...]
