Butterflies of 2017

Tiger Swallowtail

During this cold winter, I am sorting through brightly colored photographs from my compilation of Flower Hill Farm butterflies entitled ~ Butterflies of 2017. Over the years, I have documented fifty plus species of butterflies by family on my website under Photography and Wildlife. All are species that I was fortunate to find here within my 21 acre wildlife habitat. I have made an exception in this post and have included a picture of a few Northern Pearly Eyes not taken on my property. I had … [Read more...]

Metamorphosis of Butterflies from 2014

Giant Swallowtail Butterfly

The Metamorphosis of Butterflies from 2014 came together from my finally digging through archives of Flower Hill Farm photographs from last summer. Witnessing the metamorphosis of butterflies is a treasured ritual I share with thousands of other individuals who hold dear these remarkable beings. Raising butterflies nourishes my imagination and opens it to change and an ever present sense of wonder. Hour by hour and day by day convey countless small miracles to observe – bringing light and hope … [Read more...]

Flower Hill Farm Butterflies of 2012 ~ Monarchs

April 27, 2013 by Carol Duke Leave a Comment

The Monarch Butterfly Danaus plexippus, is perhaps one of the most widely known and beloved butterflies. We know that climate change, threats to the fragile overwintering sites, pesticides and loss of essential host plants, Milkweed, is causing concern for the survival of these amazing navigators. Yet Monarch butterflies have survived for millions of years and somehow I must believe they will adapt to our environmental disasters and continue to do so. It is too heartbreaking to imagine … [Read more...]

Monarch Butterfly Life Cycle: A Metamorphosis ~ Part Four ~ Lift Off Towards Migration

October 4, 2012 by Carol Duke Leave a Comment

Releasing Monarch butterflies is one of the greatest joys in the process of raising these beautiful fragile creatures.  My Monarch Butterfly Life Cycle: A Metamorphosis . . .  continues with seeing the adult butterflies safely introduced into their environment and towards the first leg of their extraordinary migration. When last we met . . . the Monarchs had mandibles for munching, six true legs and five pairs of prolegs for getting around and were cleverly composing a chrysalis within their … [Read more...]
