Moths of Flower Hill Farm
Moths are mysterious and mostly nocturnal, which perhaps makes it harder for many to understand their natures. They come in an infinite variety of colors and shapes and some are so striking that they are even more beautiful than many butterflies. All that beauty hidden from us in the dark. We have to go out and put up lights and sheets to see the array of species flying around our gardens. Actias luna is one of my favorites. They sleep all day and fly at night seeking partners to court and mate. They have no mouth parts, so no need to worry about hunting for food. Their life is made up of days and nights of sleeping and mating. Enchanting creatures of the Saturniidae family. There are many moths that do fly in the day and have proboscis for sipping nectar. The hummingbird moths and others of the Sphingidae are often seen here feasting on various flowers.
